Despondent in the pipeline

A lot has happened since our last post here! The recording process of the album has now been complete for 4 days, save for a few minor overdubs and effects that were recorded on Wednesday. We moved our amps, drums and sundry musical instruments out of the studio yesterday and will now leave David and Cedric to work on mixing. The drum sound seems to require most monkey work, however, from the teasers that we were allowed a quick listen to, it’s going to sound brilliant. We are also really happy with how guitars and bass sound, as well as vocals, although the true colour of the latter will only shine through once the entire mixing process is complete.

We’re going to have a short break (maybe a week?) from the CD so that we can approach it with a fresh mind set when it comes to hearing the mixes and then decide what we want changed at mastering level. Meanwhile, our good friends Cedric, Clint and Max from Gloryhole will be creating the artwork for us. We have basically given them carte blanche as to what they may do, as we are sure that their creative juices flow best this way, and are expecting something awesome from them.

We shall keep you updated with any progress, and promise to post a few pics and a video on here sometime next week. We have loads of footage from the studio, now there is the slight matter of sifting through it and choosing the best, and most idiotic. Also, be on the lookout for a new blog at a new URL, but more of that later!

Their album, Medusa, a bone crushing piece of melodic metal in my humble opinion, has been receiving rave reviews from around the globe, and this is very well deserved.

….and here’s what we’ve been laughing at for the last 36 hours or so:

Michael Jackson hasn’t been this stiff since Macaulay Culkin spent the night at Neverland Ranch.

Because Jackson’s body was 95% plastic, he will be melted down and turned into legos, this way kids can play with him for a change.

Reports that Michael Jackson has died of a heart attack in his home are untrue… He actually died having a stroke in the children’s ward.

In the spirit of recycling, Michael Jackson will be melted down into plastic party cups so kids can still get their lips around his rim.

In accordance with Michael Jackson’s will, little boys’ pants shall be flown at half-mast today.

Doctors are looking into claims that MJ’s death could have been caused by an allergic reaction from eating 12 year old nuts.

I heard Michael Jackson died of food poisoning from eating a 5 year old wiener.

Farrah Fawcett arrived at the Pearly Gates and God asked her what he could do for her having led such an honest life. Farrah asked God to simply make sure the children of the world were safe. Five minutes later, Michael Jackson died.

MJ’s dying wish was to be melted down and turned into straws so he can still get sucked on by kids.

50% done

Hi everyone!

The album is about half done now. All drums have been recorded for days, and virtually all the edits there are now completed. We didn’t sit on our haunches while that got done though, and recorded guitars and bass for 6 of the 10 songs. Vocals have been started too, about 3 songs are done complete with backing. And a cellist. Not really.

Back to the studio for us tonight, and we should be chalking up at least another two songs now. After this we’ll give our singer Beast some time to catch up with us in tracking, while we sit downstairs, watch comedy or 80s films and smoke ourselves into an early grave.

Second Studio Update

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend, especially all the dads amongst you!

We had a really great weekend. Work on the CD is proceeding smoothly and we’re seeing good progress being made.

A few bass tracks and guitar tracks have also been recorded and when put together with the drums it sounds really powerful, something we were going for, so thumbs up there.

More guitars and bass to be recorded today, actually, are being done as I type. Maybe a little vocals later. Let them creative juices flow!

Hey everyone, what’s up?

We are in the studio right now, doing drum track editing and having a blast! Studio life is great, you get so inspired to simply write and play the best possible music you can, it’s such a great feeling. Everything is going great, things are sounding loud and very very solid, just the way we like it.

Here’s couple of pics of us goofballing around while our good friend Cedric works on the drum tracks. He’s the guy in the blue, worst goofball of all actually!

Recording started…not

“Despondent By Design” is truly a fitting name for the album already. As you may know, we started recording today, but in actual fact, that’s not what happened. Basically, the periodical summer power cuts hit us today, affecting the entire country. I say country, Malta is of course a tiny island, but still, one can imagine the chaos erupting when everyone loses electrical power at one go. Despondent, we truly were, and of course it got slightly better before it got worse. The studio does have back up generators, but not without their issues and hassle (not to mention feeding them diesel in this heat, some of which you’re going to get all over yourself), but by the time they were up and running, power came back up. We started flirting with a drum sound, when a second outage hit. Gorgeous. So basically we decided to just call the session off. Damn shame really, we are really geared to get this recording under way and play as best we can. Hopefully the grid will be just fine tomorrow, letting us get the hell on with our stuff.

…and mayo. Which is best?

Seriously though, we are now 17 days away from recording our full length CD and you can only guess how intense the vibe is right now. We fully know that the hard work has only just begun, even if it’s going on for months, but also that we just have to get in there and make it work. Feeling very confident with our stuff and the fact that we’ll be working with friends to capture our sound as faithfully as possible. The album shall be called ‘Despondent By Design’ and is currently being clothed by Cedric and Clint at GloryHole Designs. We are on tenterhooks to see what they come up with, and have a great gut feeling about it. It will come out on a record label, more of that in the future.

After all this we’ll gig like madmen for the summer, release the album and set about touring the UK and maybe some of Europe. Any help in that area is both needed and appreciated, so if you know of any bands or venues we should contact, just send a message our way. We will thank you for a very very long time. That’s all for now. Next question, Hollandaise or Mint Sauce?

We’d like to thank everyone who was somehow involved in this set of gigs, so here goes, a list of sorts: ItEM, Insurgence and Cypher, Sean from ProStage, Eve from Remedy, Cedric and Jeff for the lights at Poxx, Daniel and everyone else for sound at Remedy, anyone and everyone who helped out with backline and all of you who turned up. We’re going to concentrate on writing and recording our new album after this booze fuelled weekend, so it’s probable that you won’t catch Loathe live for now. However, we shall be back to raise a fist of metal in summer, where we shall be so metal that ice cream won’t melt next to us. Seriously though, thanks from the heart. biwwa (c/o Loathe)
